Stump Grinding — Common Questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
Pricing depends on the stump’s diameter, how many there are, access for the machine, and the depth required. GMX provides a free estimate based on the specific property and job.
Can you grind the roots too?
Yes. Surface roots running out from the stump can be ground down as part of the job whenever access allows.
Are estimates free?
Yes. Estimates are free and come with no obligation.
How deep do you grind the stump?
Deep enough that the area can be filled with soil and planted over — typically several inches below grade. If you plan to put in a new tree, a patio or a fence post in the same spot, tell us, because that needs a deeper grind.
What happens to the wood chips?
Grinding produces a pile of chips mixed with soil. We can rake them back into the hole, which is the usual choice, or haul them away. Say which you prefer when you book.
Can I plant grass where the stump was?
Yes, once the hole is filled with clean topsoil. Chips left in place break down slowly and can hold nitrogen back from new grass, so for a lawn we recommend removing the chips and filling with soil.
Does the machine need a clear path?
It does. Grinders reach the stump through gates and side yards, so we need to know the width of the narrowest opening. Send a photo or mention it during the estimate and we will bring the right machine.
How long does it take?
Most single stumps take under an hour. Very large or multi-trunk stumps take longer.
